William M. Maguy School of Education
The history of the William M. Maguy School of Education (WMSE) was established upon the foundation provided by Proteus, Inc. Since 1967, the non-profit organization has provided Adult Basic Education and ESL educational services to farmworkers in Tulare County. The original mission was “To assist the poor of Central California in meeting their employment and education needs by conducting educational and training programs on their behalf as well as expanding the range of job opportunities available to them.” Later, in November 1972, the organization was incorporated and expanded to include the counties of Kings, Kern and Fresno. Proteus started providing vocational training in 1978. Previous vocational trainings included Sheet Metal, Automotive, Welding and Oilfield Roustabout. In 1994, Proteus opened its first Shipping and Receiving class. Since then, Proteus has established several other vocational trainings, additional academic offerings, and has become a leader at improving the quality of life of individuals by providing quality services that meet or exceed the customers’ expectations. Today, in addition to education, Proteus also provides programs to families and individuals, some of which include: workforce development, youth services, community service programs, energy services, foster care, and others.
In 2006, Proteus decided to honor its past CEO and founder, William M. Maguy and changed its school name from Proteus School of Education to “William M. Maguy School of Education.” This name change provided the school with a new identity and distinguished itself as separate from the organization as a whole. WMSE exists for the students by striving to provide classes that not only meet industry standards, but will make students marketable in their field of education. What makes WMSE unique is the school’s mission, which is focused on the student’s success.
